Vampires and Technology
Now, THAT title should get your attention...What I'm referring to is a movie I watched with my husband, Rick, last night. I've been a vampire movie fan my whole life. Rick and I even have on ongoing competition to see who can rent the best "bad vampire" movie. Believe me, we've seen some stinkers! We've seen all of Quentin Tarentino's From Dusk Till Dawn movies and loved 'em all!
We also look forward to the latest in the Wesley Snipes Blade series (Is Marvel great, or what?). Anyway, we watched the latest in the Blade series last night, Blade Trilogy. You must be thinking, "She has to be talking about the cool special vampire effects, right?" and I have to tell you...even though the special effects are worth watching the movie, that's not what I'm talking about. What I'm talking about is a pair of sunglasses and an MP3 player that was part of the vampire hunting uniform of one of the Nightstalkers (that's what Blade's fellow vampire hunters called their group). This particular female vampire fighter uploaded all her favorite MP3 songs from her laptop onto her MP3 player. Then she plugged in her MP3 player earphones, put on her sunglasses, strapped on her vampire fighting regalia and hopped on her vampire fighting motorcycle, ready to slay some bloodsuckers. As soon as she did this, I turned to Rick and asked, "Where are her Oakleys?" I just couldn't believe that the folks at Oakley didn't jump on this great marketing opportunity. Everybody knows that people automatically go out and buy the coolest sunglasses they see in the movies (How many Men in Black lookalike sunglasses did YOU see?) In this case, I'm talking about the sunglasses made by Oakley that have an MP3 player embedded in the earpieces. They call them Thumps. Now, wouldn't it have been so much cooler if she'd uploaded her music to her cool-looking Oakleys (which would have been hidden behind the laptop), then slid them on her nose and said, "Let's rock!"? You bet it would have! Besides that, there would have been no unsightly earphone wires dangling from her head. Oakley, where were you? This could have opened doors for you across the nation, not to mention every vampire hunter in the free world would have to have a pair. As for the price, (a hefty $394 with 128MB of memory and $494 with 256MB memory) when you can afford the hi-tech weapons those vampire fighters used, what's a pair of MP3 equipped sunglasses?
