So, where's the broadband?

Aaaarrrrrggghhhhhh!!!!!! I really like where I live...113 acres of trees and fields; a pond; overlooking the Big Dry Fork creek....but apparently the broadband providers around here think that I don't need a fast internet connection because other than satellite (and that's a joke, an EXPENSIVE joke), there is no high-speed Internet service out where I live. Now mind you, I live 4 miles outside the city limits of one town and 8 miles outside the other. That doesn't seem so far out of town to me.

I guess I've decided to publish my frustration because I work at home and the Internet is where I work. I maintain a dozen websites and uploading is an exercise in frustration, to put it mildly. I'm networked to my husband's desktop (that's where the satellite modems are connected) and have to share his Internet connection since there's no way I can connect satellite to a router. His upload speed is 29kbps tops...and that's being directly connected to the satellite. Imagine what mine is. Recently, I've started watching it and I get from 1.2kbps to 1.4kbps (on a good day) and that's always before 8am. Forget a decent speed during working hours.

The problem is, the broadband ISP providers around here don't seem to want to offer their services out of town without a commitment from x number of residents that they'll subscribe to the service. Heck yeah, I'll subscribe...and so will a lot of my neighbors. I'm about a mile too far out to get DSL. Cable has been moving in my direction for the past 2 years and is still about 4 miles away. Haven't these guys ever heard of the Rural Broadband Coalition?

Are you a rural dweller without a high-speed Internet connection? If you are, I want to hear from you, especially if you live in my area (between Rolla and St. James, Missouri). Can we get together and get on the broadband wagon????
